Q:How to determine how many gph the system dispenses..

Answer This Question
A: The performance of any underground irrigation system is dependent on two critical pieces of information that you need to determine about the water supply. First, you must determine the available operating flow in gallons per minute. The second variable is the available operating pressure in pounds per square inch at the point-of-connection (POC) for the system.
All that said, if you're only looking to obtain how many GPM you have available at your home, you can either use a flow meter gauge to test, or do a five gallon bucket test (which is more down and dirty). If you have a smartphone, you already have a timer and calculator. Place the 5-gallon bucket under your hose bib and open it all the way. While timing, turn it off just as the water gets to the top or 5-gallon mark. Divide 5 gallons by the number of seconds needed to fill the bucket, then times that number by 60 to obtain your maximum GPM available. So for example, if it takes 19 seconds to fill the bucket, divide 5 by 19 which equals 0.26315789473. Now, times that number by 60 and you get 15.789.
There is a much more accurate and scientific method, and the following information will help you determine these numbers:
- Static water pressure
- Water meter size
- Service line size
- Service line length
- Type of service line pipe
We have a detailed article (https://www.rainbird.com/irrigation-design-tip-water-supply) that will walk you through the process to obtain this information. However, if you have any additional questions that remain unanswered after doing the bucket test or more scientific method as stated in the article, please feel free to contact our technical support at 1-800-RAIN BIRD (800-724-6247) and we’d be more than happy to assist.

A: Gallons per hour is based on the size of the pipe you're using and the pressure behind the water and the sprinkler heads. The timer doesn't have anything to do with how much water is dispensed other than controlling the time that the water is allowed out of the system.

Q:I just installed the Rain Bird model SST-600in sprinkler timer. Everything seems to be working fine, except I noticed the words "to Water" do not illuminate on the screen. See attached photo. What is wrong? Is the unit bad?

Q:When power is out do the scheduled programs run even when power is off? How long does the battery bacup hold the date/time before it's lost and needs to be reset?
by|Jul 19, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A: If the power is completely off, then the controller cannot send commands to the valves, and the valves cannot automatically open or close. That said, if the timer doesn’t have AC power for more than a week, the time needs to be reset. This conserves battery power for future outages. Program details are kept in long-term non-volatile memory so they are not lost even after long power outages. If you would like additional help in setting up or operating the controller, please feel free to contact our technical support at 1-800-RAIN BIRD (800-724-6247) and we’d be more than happy to assist.

Q:It appears our system was installed using 12 gauge wire to the valves, and this wire is too thick to fit into the holes in the controller. Is there any way to make this work?
