A: Acidic soils make hydrangeas blue, alkaline makes them pink. To turn them blue add aluminum sulfate. To turn them pink add lime. There are web pages about this, here is one -

My Tuff Stuff hydrangeas are too small yet to bloom, but other hydrangeas in my yard are blue so I expect the Tuff Stuff to have blue flowers. I live in the Pacific Northwest and we have acidic soils.

A: On the older variety hydrangea you had to add certain minerals to the soil to get blue or pink blooms, not true with todays variety if it says the color that is what it should be, I have gotten blue when it should be pink but that was just the wrong labels getting switched around.

A: Hi Pat,
It could be difficult for Tuff Stuff to grow and thrive in zone 10. It is hardy from zones 5-9. While it would survive your winters, your summers could be too hot for this hydrangea to really thrive and grow to its full potential. In zone 10, we recommend our Proven Winners Infinitini Crapemyrtles, as they are shrubs that are hardy for this zone and do really well in hot summers.

A: Hydrangeas are a shrub, they lose their leaves for the winter but come back the next year. My Tuff Stuff hydrangeas are very young and small right now, but other hydrangeas in my yard bloom every year.

A: Hi bigphyl85,
Yes, the Tuff Stuff Hydrangea can survive and thrive in dappled sun. Its general sunlight requirement is 4+ hours of direct sun a day. However, hydrangeas generally prefer direct morning sun and dappled sun in the afternoon, as it provides relief from the extreme afternoon heat. If it is an area that only receives dappled sun, the hydrangea might require dappled sun for a longer period of time than it does with direct sunlight. It is important that hydrangeas get their necessary amount of sunlight because this will affect their ability to set buds and flower.

A: If you live in the hot south it prefers shade. Here in northeast ohio, it can take some morning sun and afternoon shade. Paniculata hydrangeas, like limelight or bobos, do better in sunny locations.

A: In addition to my previous answer, you might want to be concerned about it being too close to the street. Do you live in an area where it snows and plows will throw salt onto the plant?

Answer This Question
A: I would think so. I live in Northeast Ohio and the weather can be in the 90's in the summer and 15 below in the winter. I would plant it in morning sun and afternoon shade. Even in this hot and humid weather we've been having, mine are growing like crazy.

A: Dear Lorin,
Great question! Pasco, WA is located in hardiness zone 7a. Tuff Stuff™ Reblooming Mountain Hydrangea has hardiness zone ratings of 5a to 9b so Pasco is in a great comfort zone for Tuff Stuff™ to thrive.
Happy Gardening!
