I pulled a sample of each of these components, and both locks, though with a snug fit, they do insert and fasten to the mortise faceplate just fine. I don't doubt what you're saying is true, you make just be the "lucky one" who received a defective item preventing full insertion of the lock cylinder. To confirm, both our K 5106 and our K 5061 cylinder locks do indeed fit into our K 5064 mortise lock. You are correct in your findings; the 1-3/16 inch and 1-1/4 inch backset dimensions are measured from the front of the lock towards the back.
