A: It's not a beast--wet soil would be O.K. however.....you start running into trouble with rocky soil and/or roots..which is the case with most augers in this class

A: It likes soft dirt, hard packed mountain soil where I live at 2,600 foot elevation gives it a bit of a challenge. Often only going down only 6 inches before stopping to dig, I use a heavy digging bar to loosen soil and alternate between auger and bar.

A: My dirt was was compact, moist soil in Iowa for fence post. I would think it would work ok in wet dirt. It is a powerful motor.

Q:Where are you buy extensions for this auger? I need at least a 20" extension. HD has been 100% USELESS in this department. I finally received an extension kit I ordered more than 1.5 weeks ago, believing it was universal and would fit this auger ---- no dice, and the clock is ticking on this project...super frustrated.
Not to mention nobody in customer service is available.
If you are going to lobby as an "essential" business, then act like it and stand up to the requirement!

Answer This Question
A: The Powermate PEA438 Earth Auger has been tested and qualified with the standard 8” Auger bit that is provided with the unit. Any use of an aftermarket extension or bit is entirely at the risk of the consumer. That being said, there are extensions and bits on the market manufactured by others that may work. Our power head has an output shaft that measures approximately 7/8” (21.9mm). It is machined to accept a 10mm bolt to attach the auger bit. An aftermarket extension or bit must fit this application. Keep in mind that a sloppy fit and the use of an aftermarket extension may cause an unstable work condition and could ultimately result in damage to the earth auger power head and/or personal injury.

Q:Following all the directing I have have a very hard time starting. No gas smell so engine is not flooded. Spark plugs is dry. When and if it does start it runs great and idles perfectly. Why am I have such a hard time starting. Could the spark plug be an issue or perhaps the on off switch. I have used lots of other small engine items that usually start with the first couple of pulls. Should I take it back to retailer.

A: The Powermate PEA438 Earth Auger has a 2 cycle engine. These can typically be cold natured, which means they can be harder to start. The best thing that I have found in the case of a cold natured unit is to double the number of priming pumps on the priming bulb. This ensures that there is plenty of fuel in the carb. Place the choke on full. Pull the recoil starter until the unit starts. It may stall and you may have to repeat this a second time. Once the unit has started, you may need to use half choke for a few seconds to get the unit warmed up. Or you may need to feather the choke during the warm up process (move the choke lever between full choke position, half choke position and no choke position) while the unit is running initially until you are able to get full RPMs when applying the throttle lever.

A: After 2 years it is hard to start without giving a small shot of starting fluid for the first start of the day. After the initial start I have no issued with starting again. Replaced primer bulb too, ECHO number 12318140630. ACE is 922810.

A: I too have found it difficult to start this engine. I've found that the premixed high octane 92 gasoline works best. it also helps if you take off the air filter and spray the carburetor with a carburetor cleaner. let the engine idle for a long time, sometimes even in a semi choked position.

A: I had the same problem. I took mine back to Home Depot and got my money back. Got a blister from pulling out so much.

A: On my first try it was hard to start, first I used pure gas so it was not ethanol related. You have to use the primer ball until you see the gas
going to back to the tank the on off switch is not momentary so make sure it is on. Once it first ran, no problem after that.
