Q:Cheap LED lights emit radio frequency interference, which caused my garage door opener to not work with remotes when the lights are on. Are these shielded to not interfere with other electronics?

Answer This Question

A:  ALL our LED products meet or exceed FCC regulations in PART 95, which sets limits on the radio frequency emissions from what they call “unintentional radiators”. ALL electronic devices must meet these stadards The problem is the receivers in (especially older) garage door openers. They have very little rejection of interference. Unfortunately, if he or she has a problem (more likely with a LED lamp IN the socket on the garage door opener) with a LED lamp, there is only one solution, separate the LED lamp(s) from the garage door receiver antenna.

A:  First I would check to make sure that the Lutron dimmer you are using is for LEDs and not just for incandescent. You will notice in the aisle at home depot that they have two different colors on the tops of the dimmer boxes. This is the quick indication which you have. If I remember, the yellow label on the top of the dimmer box says LED, and the white does not... The biggest difference between an LED dimmer and a regular dimmer is the LED dimmer can be programmed to remove some of the "line noise". Sometimes LEDs can only be dimmed so far down and you have to adjust the lower end until the flickering stops. If this is not the problem it may be that you have too many LEDs on a single load. Unlike an older style filament bulb, an LED is a solid state, meaning that the light source is basically glued to a board. The flicker effect sometimes occurs because there is too much "Line Noise" on a single dimmer. An incandescent filament shakes to reduce this noise, but since the LED is solid state, the noise will build up causing the flickering. This issue is generally fixed by having fewer LEDs on a single neutral wire going back to the panel. When I install LEDs I will install dedicated neutrals for each LED fixture if they are to be dimmed. You can test this by changing the dimmer to a regular on/off switch and the flickering should stop if there are only a few LEDs on the load. If this is not the problem you may have too few watts on a single load. Most dimmers have a minimum load requirement to properly function. LEDs use significantly less wattage and may not reach an incandescent dimmer's minimum requirement. You will need to refer to the dimmer package or use the model number to look it up on Home Depot's or Lutron's website. Lastly, There are some LEDs that have a twinkle effect built into them. I did not check this product first, so I apologize if this does not help. The package usually states on the front of the package somewhere if it has this effect.

A:  Mine don't flicker even the slightest with my 10 year old dimmer.

A:  Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. This item is designed to have a sparkle effect. Philips LED candles radiate a clear, white light that features a brilliant sparkle effect, thanks to a revolutionary new lens design. This may be the "flicker" you are seeing. For more information about a dimmer I would suggest you contact one of our many Electrical Department professionals at your local Home Depot store.
