    Answer This Question

A:  Hello, the 'Heritage red raspberry requires 250 chill hours (consistent air temperatures below 45 deg F) during the winter season to set fruit. Depending on your particular area, Zone 9 may be too hot to effectively harvest raspberries.

Q:I only have a balcony for growing; is it possible to grow Raspberries and Blackberries in containers?
      by|Apr 27, 2017

      Answer This Question

A:  Absolutely! The major con may be the limiting space of the balcony depending on its size. Both raspberries and blackberries end up spreading out quite a bit, but with some creative trellising, you can contain them pretty well.

A:  Yes, it is possible to grow the 'Heritage red raspberry in a container. They are currently growing in a black nursery pot that has an approximately 6" diameter by 6" high. It can stay in that pot for the first year before it would benefit from a pot that is a bit larger, maybe 10-12" wide and tall. Provide a 5-10-5 slow release fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer; don't fertilize after August, the plant needs to harden off before winter sets in. Store the pot in an unheated area, such as a garage, for the winter. Grow in a sunny location, being sure to provide plenty of water, possibly every day during the hot dry summer months. Placing a thin layer of mulch on top of the soil will help to conserve soil moisture. **As for blackberries, it is also possible, with a much larger pot so that the plants can spread and develop multiple canes. Because the canes can grow quite long (6' or more in a season) a trellis should be utilized to control the long lanky canes. Fertilize, water, and store as for the raspberry.

            Answer This Question

A:  Yes, the raspberry can be planted from now to when the ground freezes. The planting time has no bearing on whether or not it will produce fruit next year because it is already bearing fruit this season.
