      Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Esarabia. The Dogwood tree grows best in USDA Plant Zones 5-9 (you can find the Plant Zone for your home at http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/InteractiveMap.aspx). The northern portions of Texas are within its preferred growing area. The tree needs consistently moist but not wet, well drained soil. It will need regular watering during the first year and again during times of drought.

Q:Can I plant this in November in New Jersey?
        by|Nov 1, 2015
        1 Answer
        Answer This Question

A:  Hello, thank you for your question. Spring and fall are the best times of year to plant the Dogwood tree. Planting now in autumn will ensure the tree becomes acclimated to its new environment while dormant. Mulch well, and to ensure adequate soil moisture, provide 1" of water per week (about a 5-gal bucket full) in the form of rainfall or irrigation right up until the ground freezes or right on through winter if the ground does not freeze. In spring, the tree will use its stored energy to push new foliage.

Q:Can I plant this tree on a pot?
          by|Jul 23, 2015
          1 Answer
          Answer This Question

A:  Hello. Dogwood trees can be grown in pots. Regular watering is important to maintain ample soil moisture; pot must have drainage holes to prevent wet feet. Wilting/leaf scorch can be minimized by keeping the plant out of the mid day sun, perhaps by utilizing a dappled sun/shade site or an area with morning sun only. Fertilizer feeding will also be needed as regular watering will deplete soil nutrients.

            Q:planting instructions?
            by|Jun 5, 2015
            1 Answer
            Answer This Question

A:  Hello. The pink Dogwood tree enjoys a sunny (6 hrs or more per day) or a partial sun (4-6 hrs of direct sunlight each day) location, often found in the dappled shade of a woodland's edge. The tree prefers slightly acidic, consistently moist but not wet, well drained, organically rich, loamy soil. Amending the soil before planting is suggested. Water regularly and never let the soil dry out completely, water deeply during time of drought and high heat. Prune only during the dormant period (no leaves) in late winter to thin branches and for shaping. Mulch to keep roots cool and soil moist, but do not put mulch right up against the tree trunk. Avoid injuring the bark of the tree, as wounds invite pests and disease.
