Q:does High Velocity mean hurricane clip? does this meet the Miami Dade standard for rafter tie down? (rafter in a gazebo)

A:  I doubt if anything is Hurricane proof . But I expect this to do well in our Chicago winds and winters. Good gauge of metal and you use 6 screws to secure it

A:  David, on the OZCO Building Products company website they state that these High Velocity rafter clips are “...designed to withstand winds up to 120mph...” As for me I bought these HV clips just for a little more stability. I’m up in Valdosta so if a 120mph hurricane is headed up from you guys I’m heading north. I also purchased a separate pack of the 2 3/4 hex screws to screw up into my 2x10 rafters for some more strength.

A:  Dave, Our rafter clips, high velocity or otherwise, are primarily meant for outdoor living structures and while they have been used in some light home construction purposes (patios/pavilions/arbors/overhangs) and the high velocity rafter clips have been rated up to 120 mph, the testing has been done on independent basis and those testing reports are not available at this time. If you look over Miami-Dade retrofitting requirements much of the call-outs are for replacing or upgrading nails (all sizes) and/or replacing them with screws that are corrosion resistant, have increased material thickness, and have increased holding power. Our screws included with the rafter clips will provide all that I mentioned above but do not have official approval as such. Thanks, OZCO Sales

A:  These clips look to be 10ga metal. A little thicker than normal hurricane straps.

                  A:  1.5" lumber

A:  They are 1.5" but only touch on one side so would fit an actual 2" also.

A:  Hi Chris, this is not 2", the installation guide shows the different dimensions file:///C:/Users/kba98h/Downloads/2d87de7e-9c86-4c2b-96b4-79ceda122b99.pdf .

A:  The High Velocity Rafter Clips fit 1.5 inch (2xwhatever). The clips I used with 2x8's from HD are slightly wider that the lumber.

A:  PicMaryland, I bought the 2” High Velocity Clips. That pack comes with 10 clips and 60 1-1/4 hex screws. The regular (2 hole) rafter clip comes with 10 clips and 20 hex screws. Hope that helps.

A:  The HV Rafter Clips actually come with 60 screws - 6 per clip. We will get this error updated with the proper information on HomeDepot.com. Thank you.

A:  I purchased 4 packs of 10 "high velocity" clips. Each pack contained 60 screws (6 screws per High Velocity clip). A kit of 10 clips and 20 screws is not a "high velocity" kit.
