A:  You'll need about 2 bags of gravel/small pebbles for a base layer for drainage. Then, 4-5 bags of the midsized potting mix/ soil, depending on how high to the brim you'd want to go. If planting already grown plants, they include their base soil as well. It's a very nice product. Snaps together in less than 5 minutes. I purchased 3 of them. Nice quality!

A:  Yes, you can use this product on a flat surface including the ground.

A:  You can use without the plastic mat. The mat is designed to keep external weeds or in my case grass from coming up from the bottom. It also helps keep insects out as well.

A:  Yes you can, but you have to use the black grid at least because that is what keeps the structure together.

A:  The boards dimensions are 1 inch thick, 8.5 inches tall, 3 feet 2.8 inches long.
