Q:Can this be painted

Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Jeff. We do not recommend painting our vinyl products. The white vinyl has a clear topcoat that is a UV inhibitor which protects against warping, cracking or discoloring.

Q:Can vinyl lattice be added to the top of the pergola? I live in Phoenix, no chance of snow load!

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello David. We do not recommend adding a vinyl lattice to the top of the pergola as our pergolas are meant to be decorative and not bear any weight.

Q:If I put a cover on top, will this hold a decent amount of snow weight?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello there. We do not recommend adding a hard roof to our pergolas. However, if you decide to add a canopy or something similar, we would suggest taking it down in the winter time. Our pergolas were not designed to hold weight, so having a lot of snowing pooling in the winter could cause problems.

Q:Can you use regular lumber, not pressure treated? I live in Utah and it's a very dry, low humidity climate. Or could I treat the lumber myself?

          Answer This Question

A:  You could use regular lumber is desired. We recommend pressure treated at the will be moisture build up inside the posts and beams, and the pressure treated will prevent moisture from affecting the lumber. The other possible problem with regular lumber is that it may twist inside the vinyl due to the heat and humidity.

            Q:can the width be shortened?

            Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. I've detailed some information below that will explain how to modify one of our flat-top pergolas as well as some information on modifying pergolas that we would like you to be aware of. If you have any questions on the specifics, please let me know. There are two methods to choose from when modifying a flat-top pergola: 1. The first method is to simply move the posts of the pergola inwards to meet your desired footprint and attach the rafters spaced evenly over the main beams. This will create more overhang on your pergola but this is the simplest modification to do and requires no cutting of the parts (see image "modification1"). 2. Your second option is to not only move the posts inwards, but to also cut the rafters, beams and shade slats to reduce the overall footprint of your pergola and keep the standard overhang at the top. (see attached image "modification2"). IMPORTANT NOTES: 1. The warranty on your pergola covers material defects like warping, discoloration or cracking of the vinyl for 20 years. It does not cover damage due to inclement weather, damage from external mechanical forces or damage as a result of incorrect or alternative installation methods. The information we have provided today on modifying pergolas is designed to provide you with information and advice based on your chosen installation method but does not override the tested installation methods in our instruction manuals. Vita always and only recommends the installation methods as written in your provided instruction manual. 2. We recommend when reducing the size of your pergola that you split the total reduction over the width of the structure. More simply stated, don't take everything off of one side you'll end up with a lopsided pergola. It's better to divide the measurement you want to remove and reduce your pergola in even sections across the structure. 3. All cuts should be made with a brand new saw blade with a minimum of 60 teeth. 4. It's a great idea to make your cuts near the joiners if you can that way messy or uneven cuts can be hidden inside the joiner once complete. 5. While Vita does keep a small warehouse of spare parts on hand for sale these are primarily used for customers that require parts for repairs and we can not fulfill large parts orders to accommodate a pergola modification. Please reach out to your local vinyl fencing company or hardware store to source similar parts. I hope this helps you to decide on your course of action, if you have any more questions for us feel free to reach out via phone or email we’re here to help.

Q:Can the height be increased? I need like 8 more inches to clear and overhang on my back deck…

              Answer This Question

A:  The height near the posts can’t be lengthened, but I attached the side facing the house to brackets on the roof. I needed to raise that side and I just needed to elongate the opening a little where the rafters slide thru the posts.

A:  Hello there. Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. Yes, it is fairly easy to cut down the vinyl posts with a fine tooth saw. You'll also need to adjust the height of the 4x4 wood posts that go inside the vinyl posts.
