Q:Are the sides of the surface drain parallel or are they tapered?
by|Jun 19, 2020

Answer This Question

A:  It's been several years since I installed these but as I recall, it's very slightly tapered. Probably just by 2-3 degrees to allow release draft in the molding process. Likely there is no functional purpose

Q:Does ABS glue adhere well to the Flow Well Surface Drain Inlet?
by|Jun 19, 2020
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  The drain inlet and the flow well are not made of ABS. It has been some years but I think they are recycled polyethylene (milk jugs). Whatever it is, it cannot be solvent welded with conventional solvent cements. I screwed them together with ABS pipe and stainless screws.

Q:Are you supposed to glue this in or let it rest? It seems to stay in place just resting. If you are supposed to glue it what kind of glue should I use? Thanks

Answer This Question

A:  It's been a few years but as I recall, it is not any 'gluable' plastic I have ever seen. Appears to be polyethylene or polypropylene neither of which is gluable. I was using PVC pipe....there is no pressure so I just ran 3 (stainless) screws through the fitting and pipe evenly spaced around it.

A:  I did not glue mine they are placed in the lawn area and I have not had any movement of them they are packed with loam to hold them in place

Q:Is the grate strong enough to drive over? My installation with be in a driveway and I want to be sure it won't break the first time I drive over it.

    Answer This Question

A:  I bought the 3 flow wells and have surface drains on each. All components are VERY well made of thick plastic. They are VERY durable but I WOULD NOT drive over them. If you try, I would ensure that the housing of the inlet is completely set in concrete. The larger upper lip would support the housing and prevent it from transmitting force down through the pipe. If set in concrete, I believe the housing would survive being driven over but believe the grating would break. The large area of the grate means it could bear the entire weight of one wheel and I don't think anything less than a metal grate of this size could do that. I am an experienced mechanical engineer.

A:  If you are using this inlet installed at the top of the in-ground Flo Well basin it was designed for, the thin plastic top of that basin would definitely collapse under the weight of a vehicle unless it was topped with a concrete slab. This inlet is pretty sturdy but I think that even with a concrete slab around it, the grate itself could crack from the weight of a vehicle's wheel that drove directly over it.

A:  The drain itself is completely capable in my opinion, however you use it in conjunction with a Flo Well Dry Well I'd make certain the dry well cover wasn't cut to accommodate a sump pump because that weight will be transferred to the structure below.

A:  The NDS website has an installation PDF on the Flow-Well product page that you can download which demonstrates what is required to achieve a vehicle load rating.

A:  I do not know this as mine is in the yard. however I do ride my medium size tractor over it when mowing the yard. Im very happy that it has kept my drive and garage free of water which was my plan in choosing this product.

A:  I would think...it should be heavy duty enough to drive over but I advise consulting the manufacture. Visit the website or call them directly. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Q:Is it adjustable or is it a standard height from the top of the cover when you insert it? If its adjustable, what's the minimum hight this can be from the top of the cover?

                Answer This Question

A:  The height of the cover is fixed. The side panels are 24" tall. With the lid installed the system is 28.75" tall.

                by|May 4, 2023

A:  It is not adjustable, there are no moving parts, unless you consider the lid that is held on by 2 screws.

                  by|May 4, 2023

A:  The drain will fit directly to the flow well (Flow well lid has a pipe socket the size of a pipe OD and the drain a spigot that is pipe OD) or you can add a section of pipe and coupling (at the top) to extend it. I extended mine about 3ft.

Q:Is there a screen or filter under the lid to keep dirt out of the drywell?

                      Answer This Question

A:  There is not a screen or filter for the Flo-Well. NDS offers filters for the 9" and 12" catch basins. These would remove most of the large debris before the water enters the Flo-Well. NDS part FWBP24 is a bottom panel that can be placed in the Flo-Well. Debris entering the Flo-Well will fall onto this bottom panel, thus making the clean out process much easier.

A:  There is no screen or filter inside the housing but it is actually ideal to place a wire basket inside if you could find one the right size.

A:  There is no filter, but I wrapped the grate in landscape fabric and covered it with pea gravel. It has been working fine for a month now.

A:  No, but you could easily make your own from some filter fabric.

A:  Yes, THere are two screws holding the grate in place (visible on the photo). There is no additional internal grating. A large shop vac extension and hose could easily be placed down inside it. I think the grate could readily be cast into concrete BUT It is unlikely to adhere to the concrete well enough to prevent being pushed updward. It has good support from the upper lip to prevent being forced down. I think that adding a couple of bolts through of the wall of the housing (head inside, bolt extending out) would create a good locking mechanism.

A:  Yes the grate can be removed, it is held on with 2 small screws. I mounted mine outside slightly below grade. I wrapped the grate with landscape fabric and covered it with gravel about an inch deep. It has been working fine for a month and through 2 good storms.

A:  Two screws at top..unscrew first time for cleaning........may be replacing screws if cleaning often. better change fairly often as drill-out from plastic base bad idea. Lots of Chinese-made products like that these daze.
