A:  They are roughly 4-1/4" apart. Basically behind the shade is a smaller box that has 4 tabs that are attached to the wood. The shade then attaches to the base with the provided black bolts. The shade is 3-1/2 tall by 5-1/4 wide. The base is 2-1/4 by 4-3/4. Basically make a hole big enough for the base, then it screws into the wood which is then covered by the slotted shade providing dispersed light.

A:  This deck light is 6 inches by 6 inches so as long as the box is within those parameters it will fit.

A:  The short answer is no, it is almost same size. Its is a totally self contained unit not needing any additional items except for the low voltage wire to connect it to using the provided connector. The base of the light is 2-1/2 tall by 4-3/4 wide. The slotted cover is 3-1/2 tall by 5-1/4 wide. Cut a hole large enough for the base and insert it, attach with supplied screws, connect to low voltage cable with provided connector, screw cover back on and you are done.
