Answer This Question

A:  I think they would do very well. I used them on an old metal box that was a harder steel and it did great.

A:  Hi Homebrew, I drilled through 1" hollow steel tubing which was roughly 1/8 thick steel and solid aluminum... with a little oil (probably cooking oil or PAM to avoid contamination) since you are drilling a keg...I would think it should be fine. Just drill a little slower ...so you don't scorch or dull the bits. However, if you are drilling hundreds of holes a year you may want to invest in a harder strength material as they may dull drilling through that much steel and you would have to keep replacing softer material ones. Best of luck!

A:  used cutting oil on the 2 step bits. used the smaller one first. cut hole fast and clean with no rough edges.

A:  They will dull in seconds if you try to cut stainless steel

      A:  NO PROBLEM

A:  I really don't know if this will go through a stainless steel keg as I've never tried going through stainless steel. If you don't have a high speed drill bit, it's probably going to burn the tip off. Good luck.

A:  These bits work well in 11 and 16 gauge carbon steel. The should work fine in thinner stainless.

      by|May 4, 2023

A:  You can do it, but it will be the last hole you drill with it.

      by|Dec 31, 2020

A:  I'm sure they would do the job for the first few holes...go slow and use cutting fluid. but like all bits they'll get dull and loose their edge

        by|May 4, 2023

A:  They will work at least once with a pilot hole and drilled slowly. Stainless is definitely a bit killer.

A:  The smaller bit goes up to 1/2 inch. The larger bit goes up to 7/8.

Q:Here and on Milwaukee website I see "Metal/Plastic" and "Steel and Plastic" described. When chucked in the Fuel 2604 drill, experience tells me that High Speed (Setting #2 on Drill) is fine in Electrical Steel Enclosures / boxes, but in plastics do you recommend the slower drill speed (Speed #1) to prevent melting or does the black coating provide sufficient lubricity to safely drill at high-speed without risking plastic melting/sticking on these new Step Bits? ALSO, is the FUEL Drill 2604's Slower Speed #1 (450 rpm if I accurately recall) still too fast for even occasional hole-making in ALUMINUM Enclosures or Panels? That is, would aluminum surely gall up on the Step Bit even at those slower speeds? What about variable-Triggered Drilling around half power/speed at setting #1 (roughly 200'ish RPM)? What do you advise in this case for aluminum? I'd really appreciate your best, practical advice here rather than erring simply on a "don't do it" reply if Aluminum can be so-drilled with low to moderate 'risk' in galling these new Step Bits.

A:  I used them for plastic and it was smooth as silk. I had not one issue.

A:  When drilling aluminum, spray or brush a little kerosene or WD40 on the drill bit. It works to keep the aluminum chips from sticking on the flutes, a little goes a long way. Your drilled holes will be smooth. Advice from a Toolmaker.

A:  You can cut in high speed through plastic. You might see some plastic sticking to the bit or melt but the Black Oxide coating will help with lubricity and will help keep the heat down. When drilling in aluminum, Speed #1 on a FUEL drill will be fine, even high speed with an acceptable thin gauge. Be sure to check that no material is left in the flute or stuck to the cutting edge after each cut.
