Q:how many bags of potting soil will I need to buy?

Answer This Question
A: This planter will hold 2x large (50 dry Qt) bags of potting mix. Alternatively, we recommend using bulky lightweight filler materials such as chunks of styrofoam, empty water bottles with the lids on, cut up pool noodles, shredded bark mulch etc. in order to minimize the amount of potting mix needed. *Note* Heavy fillers like gravel or rocks should NOT be used as this will overload the planter as well as interfere with the water reservoir function.

A: Hi Casey, thank-you for bringing this to our attention. I have manually calculated this planter's capacity based on internal dimensions of 31"x15.5"x13" and came out with 3.6 cu.ft which converts to 108 dry quarts. I will have our web team reach out to Home Depot to have this corrected on the listing and again we appreciate your question/feedback.

Q:Can a climbing rose grow in this pot. I know in-ground would be ideal, but I don?t have the space.

Answer This Question
A: This planter is best designed for flowers, herbs, vegetable and small plants. A climbing rose will grow very well in this planter for a number of years however please be aware that if it is a variety that will eventually develop a very large root system the plant size may need to be reduced or replanted after a number of years.

A: Hi there, thanks for reaching out! If you are looking to fill up the space within the planter you can use non biodegradable packing peanuts or you can put empty water bottles with the cap inside the planter. You do not need anything specific outside of light potting mix. Thanks!

Q:What potting soil is recommended? I have used regular bagged soil (not moisture control) and have ended up with rotted plants. I have made sure that the drainage hole is open - I can't find a well draining yet wicking soil.

Answer This Question
A: So far, I used regular potting soil. But then, I am NOT using the self-watering feature because I just rather decide on my own watering schedule. So, I drilled 4 half-inch round holes in each of the two planters I bought, and I made sure I could see daylight through the holes. Then I filled just the bottom quarter of the planters with bagged mulch to provide for more drainage before filling them to the top with regular potting soil. (The popular one). My plants seem to be doing well. But I'll know more later in the year. I only just purchased the planters about 2 weeks ago.

A: Hi there, we recommend a lightweight potting soil like miracle grow.

A: I have several of these Mayne planters (love them). Potting soil with compost tends to clog the interior holes and drains poorly ( Florida with high moisture). Try to find a mix with only pine bark, peat moss, and perlite or make your own mix
