Answer This Question

A:  Hello, the metal brackets included with our window boxes are intended for wall mounting. We do offer a kit for deck railings. The deck rail brackets simply bolt onto your existing window box brackets for an easy installation over a 2 × 4 or 2 × 6 wood railing.

Q:I purchased the 60” window box from Home Depot last summer, and I still need to install it. I also purchased the decorative brackets. The planter will be mounted on brick, and I read I will need a special masonry drill bit and masonry screws with an anchor. I assume I need the same width screws as the ones that come with the window box but for masonry. What length screw and an anchor would be best for brick or does it matter? Also does the bottom of the box need a drainage hole drilled before installation so excess water can be released?

A:  Hello, Thank you for purchasing Mayne products! The screws are 2" x 1/8" Philips head. Our window boxes have a built in overflow drain hole in the center above the water reservoir to prevent over saturation. Some customers prefer extra and will drill small holes in the back of the box.

Q:Which are better: the Mayne Yorkshire boxes made of vinyl, or the Mayne Nantucket boxes, made of plastic?

A:  Bunny, Unfortunately Vinyl, like nylon, ABS, Poiycarbonate, etc., are all types of "plastic" so in fact the Yorkshire and Nantucket boxes are both "plastic" in construction. We purchased two 4 ft and two 5 ft Nantucket boxes three years ago for out windows. Weilive in the Northeast and thus they see all the snow and freezing temps plus an occasional 85-90 degree days. We are pleased with them and their appearance on our house. We have experienced no deformation or breakage on these items. I hope this helps. Tom & Anne

A:  Hi Bunny! There are a few advantages and disadvantages to each of these models that you can consider before making your purchase. Our Nantucket style is rotationally molded from Polyethylene which is an extremely durable material designed for all seasons and all weather conditions. The rotational molding process allows us to create greater texture to the material as well as more details in the style. The water reservoir in this style is also larger than the Yorkshire since it is molded as one piece with a double-wall. The disadvantage to this style and method of manufacturing is that we are limited to window boxes no longer than 5' as anything larger is difficult to maintain a straight part. Polyethylene is also not able to be painted so this is not an ideal item for customers wishing to customize their window boxes by painting them. The Yorkshire Window boxes are manufactured from vinyl using an extrusion process which results in a much more rigid (but no less durable) material that we are able to manufacture in lengths up to 8'. These widow boxes do require assembly and have a smaller water reservoir but they can be painted using any paint designed for exterior vinyl applications. Both styles can be left out year-round even through extremely cold and freezing winters and both carry the same 15 year warranty.

Q:Are any of these paintable as the shutters are? Can you install it on a 'double-brick' 1952 home?

            Answer This Question

A:  Our Yorkshire Line of Window Boxes are our only style of window box that can be painted as these are manufactured from Vinyl. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Mayne-Yorkshire-12-in-x-48-in-Vinyl-Window-Box-4824W/202072228 For Mounting onto brick we recommend the use of concrete anchors or Masonry Screws. Full installation instructions can be found under the "Product Overview > Info and Guides" section of this product listing by clicking on "Instructions / Assembly". We recommend consulting with a local contractor prior to any installation that is not included in our provided instructions.

A:  Yes, they are paintable and they can be installed on brick. You will need to buy Tapcon screws for concrete and not use the screws that come with them. Pre-drill the holes. I have done them on stucco, concrete block and stucco. Goodluck!

A:  Hi Gigi, apologies for the delayed reply. While our window boxes can be extremely heavy once the reservoir is filled to capacity and potting mix and plants have been added, we have designed the boxes to have plenty of support as long as all of the included wall-mount brackets are used (3x wall mount brackets for this particular model.)

A:  Yes. We opted for two brackets on the 4 foot boxes and three brackets on the 5 foot boxes we used.

A:  Hi There! The durable polyethylene that our window boxes are molded from, is designed to be able to be left out in all seasons, in all weather conditions, including the coldest of Winters. There are just a couple of recommendations we do make, when leaving your window boxes up throughout the winter. 1) Make that your window boxes are draining properly by ensuring that there is nothing blocking the overflow drain hole(s) in the bottom of your window boxes. 2) It is usually a good idea to slow the amount of water you are putting in your planter once temperatures begin to reach freezing to limit the amount of excess water that is in the reservoir. There will always be water left in the reservoir and that is fine, our double-walled design will allow room for the water to expand during freezing so there is no risk of cracking. 3) Should you receive an exceptionally large snowfall, we recommend you brush snow build-up, off of the top of the window boxes to avoid excess weight from snow/ice weakening the wall mount brackets. 4) The wall-mount brackets are painted with a rust resistant coating however it is a good idea to inspect them every year or two for any signs of rusting and sand and re-paint as necessary. Coastal customers who's window boxes are exposed to salt air in particular, may want to watch for this.
