Q:Is the width really 3.76" as the photo states? That's larger than a standard single-gang faceplate?! I need a single-gang box that'll hold a large dimmer switch which is 1.25" deep x 1.75" wide.

Answer This Question
A: No. By my measurements, the outside dimensions of the box are: width 2.23”, height 3.80” and depth 3.75”. It has knockout slots for 2 #12 wires and 2 #14 wires. The box has a lot of internal work space, and works well for dimmer switches that need the additional depth. I’ve used these for dimmer switches in my projects previously.

A: In the photo, the width and depth numbers are reversed. The depth is the stated width and the width is the stated depth.

Q:How do you insert three 12/2 romex cables into this box? There are only two 12 gauge clamps. I expect you shouldn't double them up or try to put 12/2 cable into the 14 gauge clamp.

A: Maximum wall thickness is infinite. Minimum wall thickness is roughly 3 1/2" to4". I don't see what difference the maximum wall thickness makes. Think about your question and rephrase it, please.

A: I would say about 1-1/4" I use these boxes very often.

A: If you are referring to the thickness of the finishing material (sheetrock, plaster, paneling, etc.), then measuring to the point of the mounting screw exits, it's about 1 7/8". But that would put the screw right on the corner of the stud, a rather weak point. I would think that 1 1/2" would be my reasonable personal max thickness. That would be 3 layers of 1/2" rock.. But YMMV.
