A:  First you want to use galvanized fasteners, ie a cement board screw, to the wall to reinforce  the strength of the drywall to the studs. Second do not use mortar, use a modified tile adhesive. They have glue mixed it mortar for a much stronger bond. Often times I use large format tile adhesive, which is white, but I will mix in a little bit of grey unmodified to darken the color so you do not see white in the cracks. You can either apply with a large tile trowel or fill the back with a small margin trowel in what is called a “slump method” to create suction cup.
