Answer This Question

A:  If I understand your question, you are asking how do I prepare the rough plumbing to receive the Moen Single Handle Tub & Shower Faucet Trim Kit. This trim kit is set up for the Moen Posi-Temp valve which is served by the hot and cold water connections connected from the sides. The valve feeds vertical connections up to the shower head and down to the tub spout. Installing the valve requires a fair amount of skill to solder connect the copper pipe or you risk damaging the valve. Are you and advanced DIYer or do you want to hire a plumber for the rough plumbing? Plan where the head, valve and spout are to be located. A shower head is often set around 80" above the floor of the tub. The valve at 36 to 40" above the floor of the tub. The spout must be set to clear the rim of the tub. Depth of the rough plumbing is determined by the thickness of the wall with its finish. Moen does provide information about how much the valve stem needs to extend beyond the surface of the finished wall in order to receive its valve handle. The shower head must have a copper to threaded pipe adapter to receive the nickel finished shower head extension pipe. The tub spout requires about 4" of clean and straight copper pipe to extend through the wall. The spout receives the copper pipe and has a clamping mechanism to make a firm connection. So, plan the location of the head, valve and spout. Provide firm support to the wall framing for these three points. Assure that the valve, shower head connection and spout pipe are set at the proper depth. Good luck.

    Answer This Question

A:  I purchased the nickel finish trim kit and was very impressed with the product. It is very heavy metal and well finished. The only plastic in the trim kit is in the interior of the tub spout that provides a water seal around the copper pipe where it extends out of the wall. If you are doing a retro-fit to an existing shower/tub that now uses a posi-temp valve, you may need to create a copper pipe with a soldered pipe adapter to connect the tub spout. (I needed to solder together that piece because my plumbing was set up for threaded pipe.) I installed the trim kit while remodeling a bathroom in my home and I plan to use this trim kit in building two new homes.
