Q:Can this vacancy switch be used to control a bedroom ceiling fan? I have typical Hunter ceiling fans in my daughters' bedrooms and they tend to turn them on every time they enter the room. I'd like to use this switch to turn off the fan when they leave.

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello Dan, thank you for your question. Lutron products, including the MS-VPS5MH, are rated for 32 °F to 104 °F (0 °C to 40 °C), 0%–90% humidity, non-condensing, and are for indoor use only. You may only use one Maestro sensor in a multi-location application; the other switch must remain either an existing 3-way switch or an MA-AS Maestro Companion Switch. See the below spec sheet for more information: https://assets.lutron.com/a/documents/369666.pdf We hope this helps! If you require further assistance, our 24/7 support team is here to help. Q:Can I use this switch in a 4-way configuration? (one set of garage lights, two manual switches, plus this unit)

      Answer This Question

A:  The MS-OPS5M can be used in single pole, 3-way or multi-location application. For 3-way applications Lutron recommends either a traditional 3-way switch or the companion switch (MA-AS). In multi-location applications, the companion switches (MA-AS) are required. For more information on wiring please visit https://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/369488.pdf

        Answer This Question

A:  The MS-VPS5M can be used with a bathroom fan. This particular sensor is "vacancy only" which means it will only turn on manually, and then turn off automatically after the bathroom is unoccupied.

          Answer This Question

A:  Lutron recommends the MSCL-OP153M or MSCL-VP153M. These are the Maestro occupancy and vacancy sensor dimmers that have small indicator lights on the left that will emit a faint glow while the dimmer is off, making it easier to locate in the dark.

            Answer This Question

A:  Lutron Maestro in-wall sensors do not have a setting to override the auto-off feature. The sensor will always shut the light off when the programmed Timeout limit has been reached. The longest Timeout setting for the MS-VPS5M is 30 minutes.

Q:Can this switch be used together with a motion sensor switch in a 3-way situation? I want to change a regular 3-way switch into "3-way, one motion + one vacancy sensor switch". Will that work? and which ones should I choose?

                Answer This Question

A:  For 3-way applications, only one occupancy/vacancy sensor can be installed. The second location would need to be either a standard 3-way mechanical switch or the Lutron companion switch (MA-AS). For a recommendation on how to accomplish multiple occupancy/vacancy sensors on a 3-way lighting circuit, please reach out to our Support Team at support@Lutron.com or by phone at 1 (844) 588-7661.
