A:  The salt water will not harm your kayak, however, our Kayaks are tested for flat water. But we have lots of 5 star reviews come in with customers who are using them in the ocean. It is very versatile and would be fine for open ocean because of the width which will give you the stability you are looking for. We would just recommend using caution and wearing a life-vest.

A:  We recommend using the paddle that comes with the kayak. You could try using a different type of paddle if you'd like, but we have not done any testing for that.

A:  This is the youth kayak and there is no provision for a back rest. It is an awesome kayak and the granddaughters love it.

This backrest is compatible with the Lifetime Youth Kayak. It is a rigid, high-density 1/2 inch foam construction with wide nylon straps that are fully adjustable. The pad is 19 inches in length with a 7 inch height. The backrest is designed with plastic clips at each end which clip to the attachment loops on either side of the kayak. There are no attachments to keep the backrest in place behind the seat. The backrest stays in place simply by the positioning of the rider on the seat. Charlotte_HD_CHI

A:  I found them from under $100 (after using a seller's price-match promo rebate) up to $200 depending on the kayak's color (makes no sense!) and the aggressiveness of the marketer around the holidays. Free shipping is a real plus since these are large (oversize shipping rate may be charged). You may find the yellow one has an advantage over the other colors; there are a couple different models in yellow but one has a 3 piece, adjustable length paddle (great for small kids). That paddle has the bright blue blades so it is easy to spot. The paddles that come with the other color models are 2 piece black and not adjustable.
