Q:Can they be used to grow vegetables in safely?

Answer This Question

A:  While I don't have expert knowledge of the high density polyethylene (HDPE) material used in this product, I can say that it is the same material used in similar buckets which carry food items. Dill pickles come to mind, but there are other foods that are bulk-packaged in HDPE containers. I also know first-hand that reservoir bottles used in dentistry for the water that clinicians use in the mouth are made from HDPE. I also know that many toys for toddlers are made from HDPE, and are designed to be safe for the little ones who chew on such toys. Based on my general knowledge of this material, I would not hesitate to eat vegetables that were grown in buckets made from HDPE.

Q:Do these buckets have a recycling symbol on the bottom? If they do, what is the number (1-7)?

    Answer This Question

A:  My green buckets have the indication of "HDPE 2" on their recycling symbol. It's important to note a couple of things: First, the manufacturer is not required to continue using the same type of material (although HDPE - high density polyethylene is a common material used in buckets, and outside of my knowledge, Home Depot may have some requirements I don't know of). What I'm saying is that just because mine has HDPE "2" doesn't mean that you won't get a differenty type, even one that's not recyclable! Second, I have found that different recycling operations sometimes limit the types of items they will recycle, even if the recycling logo is on the item. Some governmental agencies require they take everything that's labeled, others do not require it. Without getting too political, I can tell you that in general, recycling is not a profitable thing for many waste management people; they do it because it's the law, not because they make money on it. So, yes, there is a recycling stamp on my bucket with "HDPE 2", but the one you buy may differ. And even if there is the recycling stamp if you have any concerns about it, check with your recycled materials collector and make sure they'll take it.

A:  Yes, #2; absolutely great buckets! get the matching covers too; they're great for storing garden whatever, and even to sit on if you don't have a garden stool to sit on while you're working in the garden.

A:  too broad a question; return it if it doesn't meet your criteria.

        by|May 20, 2020

A:  There is no indication on my green buckets that they are food grade. It is my understanding that there must be some sort of manufacturer's stamp on it indicating so.

A:  I don't think that I would ever use them for human food but I do keep chicken feed, dried meal worms and bird seed in them. I also use them to store play sand, lime, DE, garden stones and grass seed. However, to answer your question directly, I would have to say NO they are not food grade quality.

                Answer This Question

A:  You will have to purchase the lids separately if you want them.

                by|Jan 12, 2019

A:  I have no idea how thick they are. However, they are sturdy buckets. I would say they are the same as the orange HD ones in the store.

A:  Mine is, but they can always use an alternative material, so you need to check at the time of purchase if you want to make sure you'll get the HDPE material.

Q:Is this bucket strong enough for a 150 pound person to sit on safely? I'm a music teacher and I'd like to use these for sitting "stools" in a performance as well as bucket drums in the classroom.

                      Answer This Question

A:  I've used them as a step stool (at 220 pounds), so I'm sure they'll do the job for you. However, there is a rim around the bottom that might be a bit uncomfortable.

A:  I'm currently about 165 pounds, and with the easy off lid I feel comfortable and safe sitting or standing on it.

A:  I think that you would have no problem sitting on the buckets. Mine hold me and I am 250 pounds. However, I would not recommend STANDING on the buckets as they are not very steady.

A:  Mine look just like the one in the picture -- no graphics on the side. There is molded-in printing on the bottom with the manufacturer, recycling lable, etc.
