Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! After using Rust-Oleum Krud Kutter Metal Clean and Etch on your metal, the surface must be rinsed and then wiped dry prior to panting. Te surface does not need to be cleaned again, however you will want to paint the treated surfaces within 48 hours to prevent formation of new rust. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Rust-Oleum Krud Kutter Metal Clean and Etch is intended for use on bare metal surfaces. It will etch bare metal and dissolve lighter rust on the surface. This product is not designed for use on painted metal. While this product contains phosphoric acid, we do not recommend using it as a paint stripper. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:I am new to working with steel. I purchased some new steel U-channel and steel square tubing from a local steel supplier. The steel is coated in oil (I presume as a rust-inhibitor). My plan is to clean the steel, then use a Rustoleum spray primer and then follow up with a Rustoleum spray paint. Is this Krud Kutter the ideal product to remove this oily film? Is it more effective to soak or to spray/wipe it off? Finally, what is the best way to dispose of the runoff (or soaking) solution after it has cleaned the oil? Any other advice for my project is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A:  Good questions Cory! Rust-Oleum Krud Kutter Metal Clean & Etch is specially formulated to prepare iron, steel, zinc, aluminum and galvanized surfaces for painting. Since the steel you purchased is new and oil covered, not rusted, there may be better options for prepping the steel. A:  Product is ideal for cleaning oily protective coating and prepping the steel for painting as you've described. You need to do an internet search of "rust oleum Krud cutter sds" - I know the spellings look funny, but they will get you to this item's (Material) Safety Data Sheet. Pay close attention to warnings about personal protective gear (especially splash resistant eye goggles). This is an outside job, and you will need to contain the run-off in a product such as "oil dry" or "safety step" absorbent material (similar to kitty litter). Should be available in a 40 or 50 lb. bag at auto parts stores (double check, but I don't think Home Depot can help you out on that product). Don't let run-off get in sanitary sewer system (i.e. street drains). Once liquid is in the absorbent material, scoop it up into a heavy lawn trash bag, put that in cardboard boxes with paper wipe down towels and dispose of it. If your city/county has a hazardous waste collection facility, you might check with them to ensure you're following local best practices for safe disposal of the waste products. I would not soak the steel tubing - spray it on, wipe it off and rinse with water - you'll want to catch the runoff as I previously described. Good luck with your project.

A:  Per the Safety Data Sheet for this product, the >99% component is listed as "Proprietary", with corresponding Chemical Abstract Number also shown as "Proprietary". Your only safe assumption is that major component of this product acts an irritant which requires appropriate personal protective equipment for eyes, skin, and respiratory (despite advertising of "no harmful vapors). Take adequate precautions and be safe - look up the (Material) Safety Data Sheet online and familiarize yourself with product information before using this product.

Q:Will this prep a brass fireplace surround?

                      Answer This Question

A:  I would not recommend this solution for use on an interior brass fireplace surround prep. Although you don't say that you intend to paint the surround, I suspect that is the case. Instead of this product, get some fine sandpaper (or medium grade steel-wool) to very lightly scuff the brass surface, and then wash off any remaining dust, dirt, or grease with Dawn dish-washing detergent. Completely dry the brass, and finish your prep with Rustoleum metal priming spray paint. Your final coat of paint will finish your job nicely. Good luck on your project!
