Q:I replaced the battery in my smoke alarm, but it started chirping again about 10-11 hours later. What did I do wrong?

Answer This Question

A:  Hello. The unit has a low battery hush mode. If you put a battery that isn't powerful enough, it will go into low battery mode. If you then press the test button while the unit is in low battery mode, it will go into low battery hush mode and not chirp for low battery about 10 to 12 hours later. It sounds like the battery is not powerful enough. This usually means either the new battery is not powerful enough for the alarm or that the new batter was not put in with the proper orientation. our alarms have a unique way of testing the batteries. The alarm runs on battery alone for a fraction of a second and measures changes of resistance and voltage of the batteries. Our alarms have been rated and tested to be used with the brand and exact model of batteries listed in the owner's manual. Off brand batteries can be read as low when they are not. Also batteries close to their use-by dates can often be too weak for our alarm. With a carbon zinc battery, we would strongly recommend a battery with a good use-by date of at least 2 years out. With an alkaline battery, we would strongly recommend a battery with a good use-by date of at least 3 to 4 years out. Batteries close to their use-by date are often not powerful enough for this alarm. Make sure that when you put the battery in that you can see the top of the battery facing out at you and of the two metal contacts on top of the battery, the smaller round terminal should be closer to the edge of the alarm and the larger hexagonal terminal should be closer to the test button. When you close the battery door, avoid the test button and do not press it. Wait about 3 minutes. If the alarm doesn't chirp, you can then test the alarm. If the alarm still chirps, unplug the alarm and call us with the alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788.

      Answer This Question

A:  According to the Kidde website, the 1275 is replaced by an i12040A model. However, you may need a wire harness adapter KA-F2 to complete the interchangeability. The pin pattern may be similar but the pin spacing may be different.

          Answer This Question

A:  Hello. You would replace the battery. To replace the battery, twist the unit off the bracket. The wiring harness is attached on the back of the alarm on a small plug. There are two (2) plastic prongs on either side of the plug. Squeeze them together and unplug the wiring harness. You should then be able to take the alarm down. The battery door is on the back under the plug.

                Answer This Question

A:  Hello. High amounts of steam and heat can affect this alarm and make it more and more sensitive until it goes off. It sounds like you would be happier with the P12040 model 21029883 in that location. This alarm uses light to detect smoke and is less affected by steam and heat and humidity. However, if there is enough steam and humidity where the alarm is, especially if it is enough to condense into moisture in the alarm, it can still set off the alarm.

                  Answer This Question

A:  Hello. Yes. However, if the I12010SCO goes off for CO and and sets off all of the other combination units for CO, the P12040 will not sound for CO. It will sound for smoke.
