A:  The small hose is the outlet hose from the dishwasher and should come with the dishwasher or installation kit associated with the dishwasher. The larger hose goes to the garbage disposal or drain pipe for the sink. These can be purchased in the store in standard lengths.

A:  One hose comes from the dishwasher so you should already have that. The other goes to the garbage disposal and I believe that comes with the disposal.

A:  The hose that comes with your dishwasher should connect directly to the bottom connection of the air gap. A 7/8 " rubber hose (available at Home Depot) or any plumbing supplier is then connected to the other outlet and is connected to the dishwasher connection on your garbage disposer. Do not forget to knock out the cast plug on your garbage disposer. Should you need to extend the factory hose connection use a 5/8" rubber hose and hose clamps.

A:  Yes, but that would be the absolute limit. I have a 1-1/4" thick top and there is just 3/4" of thread left below the nut.

A:  An air gap is an anti-siphon device between the dishwasher and the garbage disposer or sewer line. It prevents flow back into the dishwasher.

A:  It is required by the plumbing code (varies by state, required in California). It's purpose is to prevent the potential back flow of wastewater from the garbage disposal or sink waste line back into the dishwasher.
