Q:I have purchased the 250 watt version of this de-icer every year for the past 5 years and they do not make it through the season. Im in zone 6. Our pond is a plastic one about 500 gallons. Will the 1500 watt be too much and will it last at least a whole season? Im not concerned on price just dont want to freeze my fish out.

Answer This Question

A:  Cheri, if the deicer is not lasting through the season, it may be due to mineral build up on the heating element. Mineral build up can cause failure, the minerals start to eat away at the stainless steel, causing it to malfunction. Try soaking the heating element in vinegar and scrubbing off the mineral build up at least once a month, and regularly check your deicer to see if there is mineral build up on the element. This should help extend the life of the deicer. The 250 watt should be just fine for your application.

A:  im also in zone 6 . i purchased the 1250 watt for my 2500 gal pond. the 1500 watt seems like to much for your pond . a lower watt should work fine to de ice your pond.

Q:What can we expect for a increase on our electric bill, running the 1500 Watt de-icer? Will it be a huge increase? Thank you in advance

A:  Hi Kimi...the amount of change in your electric bill will depend on a few factors such as weather and your kWh charge. The K&H Perfect Climate more than likely won't run 24 hours a day since it is thermostatically controlled. Let's just say that you lived in the tundra and it did run 24 hours a day...Running 24 hours a day at 10 cents a kWh, your bill would increase about $110 per month. This means that if you are at 10 cents per kWh, the maximum increase would be $110, but since you don't live in a tundra (I hope), your bill increase should be less than that. Hope this helps.

A:  Has not increased mine any over the last 4 months.

A:  We live in Zone 6 (Springfield OH)... Not Tundra, thankfully! LOL I just wondered because we have a in ground swimming pool that the previous owners converted into a Koi pond... This is our first time with a pond.... don't want to lose the Koi but I don't want to add $100 a month to my electric bill either. Kind of wishing now, we would of just brought the Koi into the basement over the winter months!

A:  i use the 1250 watt and i havent noticed much of a difference in my electric bill

A:  I am not positive about the cost increase but not that much at all . But I can tell you few things about these. It is critical to have a hole in the frozen pond at all times for the gas exchange. I have had great results with this one in particular. I am on the north shore Massachusetts

                Answer This Question

A:  Hello! Thank you for your question. The K&H Deluxe Pond De-icer is a deicer for ponds and is designed to keep a hole in the ice for oxygen exchange to keep fish alive through winter. It is not designed to keep a pool from freezing as pools are much larger than backyard fish ponds. Our Thermo-Pond units are thermostatically controlled to keep the average water temperature just above freezing. They feature internal thermostats and will turn on and off as necessary to keep a pond from freezing over, which is generally much smaller than a pool. Please let us know if you have any further questions!

A:  We're sorry to hear that your deicer has stopped working. Please check the heating element for mineral build up as this can cause the deicer to malfunction. It should be checked and cleaned as needed. The K&H Deluxe Pond Deicer does have a 2 year warranty, please contact our customer service department at 1-877-738-5188 or email them at sales@khmfg.com to receive instructions on how to process your warranty.

A:  As long as you live in growing zone 5 or higher, you can use the 750 watt for your pond. You can find the zone you are in by looking up the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.
