A:  Yes, you can use this tool to determine if an upright object is leaning. The standard tolerance for this tool is +/- ½°. Each 90° quadrant is independent; two quadrants reading left to right and two quadrants reading right to left. If you place the tool on the magnetic side on a level surface, it will read 0°; however, if you place the tool on the V-groove side on the same surface it will read 90° (plumb). Please see additional examples below. If you place the tool on the magnetic side at a 10° angle & then flip it to the V-groove side on the same surface it will read 80°, which is a 10° angle from plumb (90°). If you place the tool on the magnetic side at a 25° angle & then flip it to the V-groove side on the same surface it will read 65°, which is a 25° angle from plumb (90°). If you place the tool on the magnetic side at a 40° angle & then flip it to the V-groove side on the same surface it will read 50°, which is a 40° angle from plumb (90°). All numbers on the scale are indicating the degrees from level (0°). If you are using the tool on the V-groove side, you will need to subtract the number indicated from 90 to determine the degree of angle from plumb.

      Answer This Question

A:  I’ve used other such devices and they were hard to read. This one is very easy to read as the field is larger. Can’t really calibrate it but when compared to a known good device it matches very well.
