A:  The wainscot that the chair rail is holding is 5/16" ergo the slot is 5/16". And use wood conditioner on all the Red Oak  and 2 coats of poly and wet sand after the poly dries. Wipe the sanded surface with a damp towel to prevent the sanding white deposits on the work.

A:  That is the natural color of the wood. I just put 2 coats of no gloss urethane on it, and it is lovely as "raw wood" but finished in the sense that it is easier to keep clean with the urethane coat. I use it as a chair rail in the dining room. It adds a lovely touch to the marble table and chrome and leather chairs.
