A:  You can put any mattress height on top. I have 9" mattress and it makes bed 27" tall, or slightly taller than kitchen stools. Max height for trundle mattress is 9" but that wouldn't leave much room for bedding (1" or less).

A:  Hello, we recommend a standard mattress. The daybed depends on your liking but we highly recommend that the trundle is 7-8 inches. Thank you for shopping with us!

A:  as is, over slats, I put boxes in trundle and works fine. I may yet put 1/4" sheet of plywood over slats and use it like a dresser drawer. No intention of ever putting mattress in trundle.
