A: The cabinet comes with 2 rods per drawer for hanging files. About 12 inches, front-to-back, of hanging files per drawer. However, if you were insert a hanging folder frame, you would have the full 21 inches side-to-side in each drawer. This might require you to reinforce the drawer bottoms. A: If you go with the drawers as configured, you'll be disappointed by the filing capacity of this console. Each drawer only accommodates about a foot ( I measured) of files, letter or legal. The interior of each drawer is notched in three places to accept letter or legal-sized files, depending on where you place the two metal bars included.
However, before I purchased this item, I read reviews that stated that it was possible to replace these bars with hanging file folder frames so that LETTER-sized files can run laterally instead. I purchased a two-pack of letter-sized file folder frames that I was able to custom fit to the width of the drawers (about 21.5 inches - many frame kits are pre-notched to be customized down to 23 inches, so I had to get creative with hand tools to fix mine - if you have a metal saw or Dremel it would be easier). The fit is not perfect but it works for me. Here's a photo to show the final outcome.
