A:  I bought 4 pairs and they all extended by pulling the smaller rod from the larger rod. I have them each at varying lengths. I used them to divide a basement room. The smaller rod easily slid into the larger end. I'm not sure why you're having issues? I would check to make sure the rods aren't bent anywhere preventing them from sliding.

A:  The smaller rod just slides in and out of the outer rod (fairly) freely. One of mine was stuck, and I had to shake it vigorously to get the smaller end to pop out just enough to grab it with a pair of pliers.
