A:  The purpose of the chain is to support the fixture so that the full weight of the fixture isn't pulling on the wires. You could do away with the chain if you supported the fixture some other way. I don't care for the look of a chain, so I covered mine with a section of a black plastic shower rod cover. You could also make a cover for the chain out of fabric and velcro.

A:  There is nothing that will keep it from spinning, however, mine has been hanging for a few years now and it rarely needs straightening. I have mine over my sink, so it's not actually over an island, this could make a difference. But as for there being a device or set up to keep it from shifting, there is not.

A:  Inertia.

A:  Once it is in place it should not spin. It will balance out.

A:  I have had mine over the kitchen sink for close to 3 years now and haven't had any problems. A bathroom, however, may be different. I would consult an electrician before purchasing.
