Q:Is this suitable for putting grommets through a waterproof picnic blanket? The blanket itself is fairly thick (quilted top, cotton middle layer, tarp bottom); the waterproof-tarp backing results in the blanket slipping around on the ground. I'd like to add grommets to the blanket so we can stake it into the ground.

Answer This Question
A: It should be, but it will depend on how thick the fabric of the blanket is.

A: i would suggest cutting the holes by hand with scissors, and using this tool to install the grommets. I know I could make it work. If you are handy and creative, it should work for you.

A: You would need to check with your local Home Depot for availability of that service.

A: Hi phyllis, unfortunately we do not have an assembly service that can be added to your order on Homedepot.com. I believe the best advice would be to talk to one of our specialty department professionals at your local Home Depot store or you may be able to find a Home Depot recommended professional in your area at proreferral.com. Please visit proreferral.com for further assistance with this particular project inquiry. Thanks for shopping Home Depot!

A: If I worked there, I would sure do it for you. Sadly, this is a project that will take way more time than they are willing to give you. The installation is really quite simple. One lays the area of the grommet receiving item that needs a hole, on the hard wooden block, positions the cutter on it, and WHACK goes the weasel, er, I mean hammer. I remember having a few trepidations about doing it the first time. But, I found that it was easy...and shall I say fun? Nah. But there was a satisfaction that accompanied the successful completion. I am hoping that hd means Home Depot. The only other hd that comes to mind doesn't sell grommets and charges way to much for their stuff. Home Depot has consumer friendly prices.

A: Couldn't say for sure - but the brass grommet's shoulder has to be preened over in order to hold - so perhaps 1/16" - the 3/8" grommet has a shoulder of 1/8" - so I wouldn't want to go much more than that (1/16") - at least with with the 3/8" grommet.
Keep in mind that when you preen the grommet - it compresses the material. The 1/2" kit is pretty short money, so maybe just get it and run some tests? You'll find another use or uses for for it sooner or later.
Good luck!

Q:I have a wide brim golf hat that is slightly too big. I'd like to put small grommets in the brim close to the crown, and add a rawhide string to keep the hat attached in windy conditions. Would this tool do the job?

Answer This Question
A: Probably - but you might want to get a smaller grommet kit - like 3/8"
Also - look around to find a hat that has that particular feature so you get an idea of where to position the grommets. If you look on the web for a Tilley Hat - you'll see the grommet holes are in the top part, not the brim.

A: Yes, I would think so.

A: I would guess yes. I had no trouble punching holes in a tarp. I never tried anything else, hats or leather belts.... If you can't get it to cut thru, you will have an outline that you could complete with a #11 blade.
