        Answer This Question

A:  As specified by the unit's spec sheet, Generac's 50-Amp GenTran Series manual transfer switch, model number 6296, will require having a 100-amp 2-pole main breaker installed in the load center during setup; this should be completed in the field by your chosen installer. Q:Can this be used with two apartments (separate utility hook-ups)?
          by|Dec 2, 2013
          1 Answer
          Answer This Question

A:  Generac’s generators are designed and manufactured to back up only one utility service. If both apartments utilize two separate utility hook-ups, each would require their own generator. Any damage incurred from a configuration attempting to utilize one generator to provide back-up power to two separate utility hook-ups will not be covered under the product’s warranty, as such configurations can be dangerous and are not recommended by Generac. We recommend contacting a certified dealer for further sizing and compatibility assistance. If you need help finding a dealer in your local area, please contact Generac directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722).

Q:Can I use a 30amp generater with the Generac 50 AMP transfer switch?
            by|Nov 11, 2012
            1 Answer
            Answer This Question

A:  There is no reason you cannot do this, as long as you do not exceed the output of the generator. The 50 AMP kit total breaker rating exceeds 50AMP, you just don't use all the rated output at the same time, with a 30 AMP generator you use even less. The 50 amp kit comes with a cord to hookup to a 50 AMP outlet on your generator. You'll need to remove the 50 AMP plug (at the end that goes in to your generator) and install a 30 AMP plug instead. This kit has a NEMA 14-50 plug that goes in to a generator. Most 30 amp generators have a NEMA L14-30. So you would remove the NEMA 14-50 plug and install a NEMA L14-30 plug. FYI - when looking for a plug, a suffix denotes whether the item is a plug or receptacle. So NEMA L14-30P is a plug, whereas NEMA L14-30R is the receptacle. If you can change a plug, then you can make this work. The important factor here is you are not exceeding the rated design. Using a 50 amp generator on a 30 amp kit is bad, you are not attempting to do this. You could make your own adaptor, but you'd be buying a NEMA L14-30P and a NEMA 14-50R with a water proof housing and some cable. Much cheaper to just buy a NEMA L14-30P and swap the plug out on the supplied cable.
