Q:What's the difference between the thick double pole 30amp and a thin double pole 30amp circuit breaker? Can I use either one just the same and it'll be ok for an electric dryer?

Answer This Question

A:  The THQP230 performs the same application as the THQL2130 but in half of the space required, but can only be installed in GE load centers that accept THQP space saving breakers. Thank you for your question.

by|Mar 13, 2024

A:  Both the thick and thin are for 240 volt circuits. The Thin THQP breakers can only be used in some GE loadcenters. Beware though, the thin THQP breakers used in older GE aluminum bus loadcenters have been known to catch on fire when heavily loaded.

A:  GE's THQP 1- & 2-pole breakers only fit GE panels that can accommodate them. Check your panel's directory decal, which also shows bus bar configuration. If it indicates A and B on some positions (e.g. 25A, 25B, 28A, 28B, etc.), then THQP can be used.

A:  Yes, it will accept #6 wire which is necessary for a 50 amp circuit when using NM cable. Only #8 is required for 50A circuits if the conductors are THHN in conduit.

A:  some brain surgeon needing to rewrite the electrical code whenever they turn him loose has now deemed the number 8awg is no longer fit for a 50 amp breaker. Forcing the industry to rewire 100's of 50 amp house appliances to number #6 wire.

A:  Read the label inside the panel, it will tell you what breakers can be used in your panel. Look for type THQP. Follow the installation instructions for the amperage of the breaker.

A:  This breaker functions the same as any other 2-pole breaker. It's not a tandem breaker. It only fits GE panels in spaces that can accommodate THQP breakers. Being 2-pole it must be installed on the half stabs of adjoining spaces (e.g. 26B & 28A, etc.)

A:  The breaker does not put out voltage. You draw current through the breaker. This breaker is typically used for 240 volt circuits.

A:  No. Both poles are on the same phase.

A:  You stove will have the minimum breaker specification. Be sure to follow those specs. Also make sure the wiring gage is appropriate for the load. Lastly, to be honest. If you have to ask that question I would strongly recommend you hire a licensed electrician to help you. You will be able to sleep at night knowing that your house will not burn down.

A:  No, this is just a 20 amp breaker. Most electric ranges require a 40 amp circuit and some require a 50 amp circuit. Check the manufacturer's installation instructions.
