Q:Is this the same as a tandem breaker

    Answer This Question

A:  No, it’s not. This is a double-pole breaker, it services a 240-volt circuit by using a single space in the electrical panel. A tandem circuit breaker is a double circuit breaker that also takes up a single space in the electrical panel but it provides 2 separate 120-volt circuits.

Q:Will this fit a very old 1950's timeframe 100 amp GE Panel? Panel Catalogue number RP2010A. All I can find is "used with Type R GE Breaker" I am looking for any breakers I can buy to clean up my old panel. I had some new breakers but they didn't fit.

          Answer This Question

A:  Probably not. There should be a label inside the panel that tells you what breakers the panel will accept, but if the label is gone you would be better served to just replace the panel.

Q:Is the overal width one half inch, or is each pole one half inch.. I have a double pole 45 amp breaker and the width is is seven eights inches?
          by|Aug 23, 2017

          Answer This Question

A:  The description is incorrect. The overall width is 1 inch. It is half the size of a normal 2 inch wide, 2-pole breaker. This is for 220 volts only. It has a common trip, meaning both switches trip during an overload (as a 220 volt breaker should). Do not use this breaker if you are trying to replace a single-pole breaker to get two 110 volt circuits in the same space, that a different model number.

A:  These are thin 1/2" breakers. The phases are split by 1" so unless you stagger them correctly, even this 2P will be in same phase, thus no 240V possible (0 volts).

                  Answer This Question

A:  No, you do not have room for a double pole breaker in your panel. The single pole breaker will not work.

                  by|Jan 30, 2021

A:  Yes. You may have to rearrange some of the existing breakers to fined the right bridge. but it should fit.

A:  The answers claiming this won't work for a 240V appliance are wrong. The only purpose of this breaker is to power a 240V appliance. That's why there's a metal peg connecting the two switches so they trip at the same time. I have several of these breakers powering dryer, water heater, and aircon, so I'm answering with high confidence. I know it can do this because it is doing it right now. If you have a 120V appliance, you should have gotten a 1/2"-thin single version of the same breaker. They're sold singly so adjacent breakers don't need to have the same current rating. Also, that version trips independently. Part of one previous answer is correct. This is a GE breaker that requires a GE panel, which has different tabs than a normal American panel. There is a half-width system for normal American panels that works differently and generally requires replacing a 2-pole breaker with a quad-pole breaker. That's not what's going on here. This breaker won't even fit into a normal panel. HTH.

A:  This is a double pole breaker, so it is not a single phase. Yes, it will work on 240 volt.

                      by|Jan 14, 2021

A:  This is a two-pole half-width breaker specifically for GE panels that have "half-stabs" on the buses. It will only yield 240V when it is installed across two half-stabs of different phases (e.g. breaker space 23B & 25A). It will not fit full-size (1") spaces without the half-stabs. Specific to your question, Jim, the answer is "no." The only options for getting a new 240V line in your case would be to move an existing circuit to a tandem breaker to free up another space above or below the one you already have. Then you can stick a 2-pole breaker in there. Unless you're absolutely sure about what you're doing, though, call in a qualified electrician.

A:  This will not power a 240v electric dryer. This uses one phase to connect two circuits and can't provide 240v off the same phase. You should combine two 120v circuits on one phase to free up the space for the 2 pole 30 amp breaker you need for your dryer, if your panel allows the tandem breaker (aka slimline breaker)

A:  Yes, this breaker will power your 120/240 volt electric dryer IF the GE panel will accept the thin Type THQP breakers, not all GE panels accept these breakers. Check the label inside the panel for the type breakers your panel will accept. That being said, you should also check the age of the panel and see if your panel has aluminum or copper bus. GE Type THQP breakers have been to catch on fire when used in older GE aluminum bus loadcenters.
