Q:What does "indoor" mean? Is an unheated garage considered Indoor"?

Answer This Question

A:  Indoor means not exposed to rain or snow, so an unheated garage is fine.

by|May 5, 2023

A:  In my opinion, Yes. It's dry, clean, not subject to wind blowing dust and dirt into box and hopefully that ever pleasant treat, ants crawling into electrical box and dying. Only possible consideration might be on a south or west wall that gets a lot of solar heating. Back in the good old days, we needed to keep discrete transistors below 85 or 90 degrees F and the backside of stucco or HardiePlank can get about 105 F easily. I would expect first and maybe only effect would be time being fast (or slow). Maybe some soft insulation or a small piece of foil faced R-Max insulation behind electrical box can slow or block solar/thermal heating.

A:  In my experience, the outlets in a garage have to be GFI protected but not water proof....water proof or water resistant is a good idea though, in my opinion. Lights and light switches are not GFI protected or water proof in the garage. Light switches are at chest height, and away from a damp floor. That's my take on this. I would think the timer switch would be OK. A clear plastic cover might be a good idea too, if concerned.

by|Nov 14, 2017

A:  Yes. An unheated garage or even a dry birdhouse should be fine. Anyplace that stays dry is ok. The device uses electricity which can be dangerous if damp or wet. Excessive dampness can cause corrosion as well. Most seasonal temperature variations should not cause any problems. However, arctic, desert or marine environments may shorten it's life.

A:  One of mine is in an unheated garage. It works fine. I believe that generally the term "indoor" means in a location that is completely protected from the weather. so as not to induce weather related degradation or damage. A garage would usually qualify.

by|May 5, 2023

A:  Indoors to the manufacturer means inside the heated area of the home. The moisture in a unheated wet area may , in time, affect the timer. I'm thinking of wet when you bring into the garage area a wet or snow covered car or whatever.

Q:I only have 2 wires in my electrical box where the switch will go. Will it work with LED lightbulbs with the 2 wires?
by|Nov 5, 2017

Answer This Question

A:  You should have a black (power), a white wire(neutral), and a copper or green wire(ground) in your electrical box now. You should have these 3 wires to connect to the timer switch or it will not work. Your old simple light switch may only be hooked up to the black wire, but there should be a white and a copper wire there in the box to connect to the switch in addition to the black.

by|Nov 6, 2017

A:  Unfortunately this timer cannot be wired in a switch location with only 2 wires. This timer requires your switch location to have access to all 4 wires necessary for a lighting circuit. The Intermatic timer uses a battery to turn ON/OFF and will do job within electrical code. Tape off separately all wires except black and Blue, Black to black and blue to white https://www.homedepot.com/p/Intermatic-15-Amp-Heavy-Duty-Astro-In-Wall-Digital-Timer-ST01/203954917?MERCH=REC-_-rv_gm_pip_rr-_-205478792-_-203954917-_-N

by|May 5, 2023

A:  This timer works with incandescent or LED bulbs. However, it requires the ground wire and the neutral wire. It will not work in your situation.

by|May 5, 2023

A:  It should, just put wire nuts on the carrier wires, and use only the black, red and white wires.

Q:Could someone explain to me how to turn the lights off during the day? The lights come on at dusk turn off at 10 pm.

      Answer This Question

A:  You have to program it to turn on during the day instead of running DUSK mode.

      by|May 5, 2023

A:  If I don’t understand your question correctly, please re-state it and ask again. Having the lights come on at “Dusk” (Sunset) and turn off at 10:00PM is a very reasonable use/application for this timer so I assume you are asking how to program for this sequence. (The other choice is you already programmed it for Dusk and off at 10 AM and 10 AM has not occurred yet when you notice problem) If you would like the timer to turn on at the Pre Set time for DAWN press “ENTER” and move to P1 OFF setting. If you would like the timer to turn on at the Pre Set time for DUSK use the + or – buttons to change the option on the screen to DUSK and press “ENTER” and move to P1 OFF setting If you would like choose a custom time other than DAWN or DUSK use the + or – buttons to change the option on the screen to TIME and press “ENTER”. The hour should be blinking. Use the + or – to set the correct hour. If you pass 11 to 12 you will change the AM to PM. Once the correct hour is found press “ENTER” to confirm. The Minute should be blinking. Use the + or – to set the correct minute. Press “Enter” to confirm. The screen will show PRG, P1 OFF and the days of the week will be blinking. Choose the days you want the program to be active and press “ENTER”. Now that you have chosen the days the timer will function the next step is to choose the time the program will turn off. There are 3 options to choose from when selecting the program OFF time. Use the + or – to scroll through the options. • DAWN • DUSK • TIME If you would like the timer to turn off at the Pre Set time for DAWN press “Enter” . If you would like the timer to turn off at the Pre Set time for DUSK use the + or – buttons to change the option on the screen to DUSK and press “ENTER” . If you would like choose a custom time other than DAWN or DUSK use the + or – buttons to change the option on the screen to TIME and press “ENTER”. The screen will now say “SAVE” Press “ENTER” to save program 1 to the timer. P2 (Program 2) ON should be blinking. Press “ENTER” to begin setting P2 ON. You may also use the + or– buttons to scroll through all 7 programs or push AUTO to complete the programming.

A:  If it turns off at 10pm, it was set to do so. You just need to change or adjust. I don't have the instructions off hand but first read through it. There are 2 sets of programs you need to verify and adjust. First set of programming is to define the Dawn and Dusk time. That is not the on / off time. This is what the timer will base the calculations on to adjust for the change of season. Guesstimate the dawn and dusk time or check your local weather report for that. The second set of programming is to define the On time and Off time. Use P1 (Program 1) and simply set it to ON at Dusk and Off at Dawn. Check the other programs like P2 and P3 and delete those other times you may have set in there, unless of course you have other on/off time you desired.

          by|May 5, 2023

A:  Did you remember to program the timer correctly? Assuming dusk in you location is 5 did you program in the "PM"? Did you program in the date/day too? If programed properly the lights should not be on if/when you programed them to be off.

          by|May 5, 2023

A:  if the lights turn off at 10pm, then they should not be coming on during the day. however there may be a setting which requires further programming to not have the lights come on at sunrise or during the day. you can also manually turn the lights off by tapping on the cover plate.

          A:  Yes

A:  Yes, it does require the black, white (neutral), and ground. The white is almost always the neutral, but on rare occasion, I found it wired HOT by prior electricians. Anyhow, there should be white wires in the switch box to wire the white wire from the switch to.

A:  NO, IT DOES NOT REQUIRE A GREEN NEUTRAL WIRE. I HAVE FIVE INSTALLED NOW.

            by|May 5, 2023

A:  I reread the instructions, they indicate attaching the green wire to the bare ground wire. So it's indicated from the directions the green must be grounded.

Q:Does it fit a regular Wall plate?

A:  Yes. Use regular "Decora" style http://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-Decora-1-Gang-Midway-Nylon-Wall-Plate-White-10-Pack-M52-0PJ26-0WM/100356780

A:  Yes, it does. I fit mine into a 3 wall switch at my front door, but it will fit in a single one as well.

                by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes, but it would have to be the "decorative" type with the larger opening. When you buy the switch you can match it up to a wall plate at the Home Depot if you do not have one already.

                  by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes, this will fit a single or double standard wall box. If the metal facing on this timer switchhappens to be a bit wide, it does have "snap off edges" that can be broken off to fit better. If installing in a double switch set up, a new switch cover can be purchased at a very low cost at any hardware store.

A:  I'm not sure why you would want your interior garage lights on a timer, but yes, this timer will work. Just replace the garage light switch with the timer switch and program.

A:  Thank you - when you say that it will cycle to turn the lights on, does this mean that it will just automatically turn the lights on at the programmed time the following day?

                      by|May 4, 2023

A:  Hi Red, Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. Yes, once you manually switch the lights off the timer will detect it as an override. It will then cycle through the next programed cycle to turn the lights on. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to respond or contact our Customer Support through phone or email.
