A: If you use store brand batteries will last about a year. Name brand will last longer than a year. That's something I have noticed the hdx batteries do hold good in the smoke detectors. They will chirp when the battery needs replacing.

A: I automatically change the batteries every year for safety issues because the buildings that I installed these are Churches and their attached properties. Out of the 20 plus we have, only 1 chirped withing the year to be changed, and it was the 11th month.

A: Chirping is the detector's way of letting you know that the battery is low and needs to be changed. It will continue to chirp until a fresh fully powered battery is installed. So fresh batteries correctly installed will end the chirping.

A: I had the same question as I couldn't get the test beep to work, and found a YouTube video on it. When you open the battery door, the + sign goes on the left, and you will be able to close the battery drawer. If you put it in backwards, it will not close, so just flip it around. To test the device, you have to hold the test button a few seconds. If it beeps you're good to go!
