A:  I have always followed the flow direction. You have to make an arragement with the pipes to get the flow in the direction indicated. One of those might be placing the filter at the right side of the pipe where the water comes out from the wall

A:  While both filters will work for your situation it really is a matter of preference on which you use. Going with the 3 micron option will eliminate smaller particles than the 5 micron model but if it not particles you are worried about both filters will work to improve the taste and odor of the water.
