Q:How do I size for my project? Double box beam, through post, then through 2x. I'll be drilling through double 2x (3"), then through a 4x (3.5") post, then through another 2x (1.5") for a total of 8" - are the 8" EXACTLY 8", or do I need to change my project design? By the looks of these bolts, they only thread at the end.

Answer This Question

A:  I put an 1 1/2" x 7" notch in a 4x4 and attached it to a double 2x8. I boxed in the 4x4 with 2x8 blocking. The result was 6 1/2" of material to bolt thru. I used three ThruLok fasteners in a skewed triangle pattern. It was quicker and stronger than two 1/2" bolts.

A:  No. From the Fasten Master website; the capacity of the 7" ThruLok is 5 1/4" to 6". Your two 2X are 3" and your 4X is 3 1/2" so you're a half inch over manufacturer rated capacity. The 8" ThruLok is rated 6 1/4" to 7" and the 9 1/2" is rated 7 3/4" to 8 1/2". Go with the 8" version especially if you're meeting code. As long as I'm quoting ThruLok the 6 1/4" capacity is from 4 1/2" to 5 1/4" .
