It can be installed in any standard 15/16" grid system, suspended or surface mounted. We do not recommend directly applying it to a substrate. They are mostly designed to create the appearance of an old tin ceilling look for a fraction of the cost and greater ease of installation. A:  Thank you for your question! The 2 ft X 2ft Lay-in Ceiling tile in Brushed Nickel is meant to lay in to a grid system. We do not recommend direct applying the tiles to a substrate being that there is an overlapping lip on all four sides of the panel.
