Answer This Question
A: I think they cost more because they are stronger and nuts and gaskets are three or four times thicker

A: Apparently because prices on all these parts are assigned at random, or perhaps based on what inventory they have "somewhere" in the great computer in the sky. You can't make sense of it, and if you can find what you need for a few bucks and go home to do the job, you're ahead for the day.

Q:can I buy a special wrench to fit the bolt (5/16 inch) so that it makes it easy to install the bolt?

A: It depends on the design of your toilet. If you have room for a wrench, then you can use that. Otherwise, some kind of extension and bit on a ratchet socket tool will help. DON'T OVER-TIGHTEN or you can break the tank.

A: No special tool is required. It simply installs with a regular screwdriver. A flat head (slot head) will do thre job.

A: +1 unhandyman's answer. From the fluidmaster link he shared, from top to bottom:
a bolt b gasket c toilet tank d metal washer e nut f toilet base g gasket h metal i washer nut
Gasket forms a tight seal on its top and bottom, but not along shaft of bolt.

A: Gasket-washer-bolt in the tank and gasket-washer-hex nut on toilet.

A: First install a rubber washer on each bolt. Run the bolt through the rank and into the base. Add a metal washer to the bottom, and tighten with a nut. I recommend that you clean any silt inside the toilet around the bolt holes, and apply vasalene to the washer to get a tight seal.

A: So I wondered this myself and at fluidmaster, they describe the order of things and WHY you are getting what appears to be extra parts.
For most toilets you would put the rubber gasket in the tank and the metal washer on the outside. However, if you have a gap between the tank and the bowl as is the case on some toilets, you repeat the process twice with the extra metal washer immediately under the tank, then a bolt, then another rubber one above the bowl repeated by the metal one under the tank. Some people suggest putting the metal washer also in the tank (above the gasket), the article says this can cause a leak and to only use the rubber gasket in the tank. And others also suggest putting the extra rubber gasket on the bottom to protect the porcelain, then the metal one next to the nut. I supposed the latter is an option if you don't have a gap but isn't actually necessary to prevent a leak.
Link might eventually change but was valid at time of posting where this information is found:

A: The rubber washers go against the porcelain on both sides followed by the metal washers.

A: The rubber gasket goes on the inside of the tank and the metal washer is on the outside of the tank and is secured by the nut. The package contained two sets of rubber gaskets but I only used one washer for each bolt hole on thre inside of the tank. So, now I have a spare set in case of an emergency.

A: Metal and rubber inside tank. Rubber and metal outside tank with a nut. Rubber and metal with nut to toilet. ( I purchased extra as leak persisted)

Q:Will this kit fit an Eljer toilet?

Answer This Question
A: This should work on all tanks.
by|Jun 18, 2019
A: It's universal and will work for any toilet that has a separate tank held on by 2 bolts (not 3). When you do the tank bolts, it's a good idea to replace the big foam gasket where the tank drains- be sure to get the right size for that.

Answer This Question
A: Yes, the old gasket should be replaced.
by|Jan 29, 2019
A: I think so because my leak stopped when a gasket was put on inside and outside the tank. Now the metal washers I put one on outside and zero inside leaving me with extra washers. I think putting extra washers on outside act as a lock washer.
