A: You want to focus on the dye lot - this is where the true variance exists. So if you place an order today, and decide to place an order two months from now, you want to make sure the second order is sourced from the same dye lot as the first order. If there's no more material from dye lot A (first order), the second order would most likely be filled from dye lot B. The variance is minimal, but the variance still exists.
