A: Notice the black "pipe" sticking up from the corner in the picture. You water through that pipe; the water flows to the base of the stand. When starting out, the directions say to use moist potting soil. Since I am not using this for starting plants, I did not put the top "screen" on and I am watering the exposed soil and not using the "self-watering" feature. Eventually, when my tomato gets larger, I will be using the self-watering feature as insurance to maintain moisture.

A: There is a layer beneath the soil where water accumulates via the pvc pipe attached at the corner, where you would continue to water when needed. The soil absorbs water as needed even if you skip watering from the top.

A: Yes to your question. I planted tomatoes, green onions, jalapeno peppers, leaf lettuce, radishes and bell peppers in mine last summer. I bought 4 of these last summer and put them on the top of or deck as our yard is to shady to support a garden. These worked very well and thinking about buying more.

A: Yes I did, I did not use self watering feature, just filled with miracle grow potting soil. Must use light soil in these containers or legs may buckle or break.

A: Don't forget that depending on what you are growing, you may need bugs to pollenate you veggies. My friend in the bay area tried to grow tomatoes in her sun room a few years ago. Lots of blooms but no tomatoes. It took her a few weeks to catch on.

A: Yes and can be moved when needed out side for direct sunlight when needed. I use a mosquito net to cover when outside to protect from insects because I move back and forth.

A: I dont know why you would want this indoors but I see no reason why you couldn't if you are careful. The water resevoir you fill up has an overflow system. If it overflows you will have a mess. If you have it really full but not overflowing and move it around you could slosh it and have some spillage.

Q:Is it possible to order a replacement mulch cover for this garden? I picked up two of these at a garage sale but they did not include the covers.

Answer This Question
A: I purchased 3 foot wide black plastic sheeting, then cut it 6 inches wider than the planter. Works just as good as the original and for $15, I have a lifetime supply (50 feet long, so equals about 25 mulch covers). I think it was 4 mil, but the original might have been 6 mil.
I also found that electrical tape works better than the rubber band which came with the planter. The rubber bands get broken down by light really fast--like 2 weeks. Electrical tape pulled tight lasts and lasts. I've also used binder clips to hold the mulch cover to the edge of the planter, but they rusted in the first rain.

A: I am not sure, but you could easily make some out of black garbage bags. and giant rubber bands. Be careful, these buckle easily under the weight of soil and plants
