    A:  I would say you can ratchet it down to about 12 in between the two hooks...

      A:  Hello Zekee, You will be able to shorten the length down to 11" just make sure that the extra webbing is not left hanging/dragging if being used on the road.

        Q:How long is the permanently attached strap on the ratchet?

        A:  The answer from Everest is misleading...the length of the strap and ratchet together is 12 inches long. However, the permanently attached strap and S-hook is only 8 inches long. I really needed the strap and s-hook to be 12 inches to work well for my application. I guess I will keep looking for something else.
