Answer This Question
A: Hello,
The back side of the Alder panel is not intended to be exposed. It is a hardwood veneer but may be a different species of wood on the back of the panel.

Q:One of the photos of alder wood panels shows them finished in four different shades. Each one has a rich, warm color. Can anyone tell me what type of stain and/or varnish might be used to achieve this look? Wipe on stain? Gel? Penetrating stain?

A: Hello Barb.
The panels (at least in my case) came unfinished but sanded smooth on both sides.
Like most specialty plywood there is one side with a furniture grade appearance (No stain), and the other side might have small tight knots or darker streaks in the grain. Plan on applying a good quality sanding sealer per the manufacturer's instructions and follow with your choice of stain color. In my case I used Minwax for both the sanding sealer and stain (Fruitwood) with several coats of Minwax satin polyurethane to complete it. Again, following the instructions on the spray can for best results.
If you're trying to match an existing stained piece (cabinet or furniture), you may need to apply several coats of the stain you've chosen to achieve the desired color shade you're looking for before applying the polyurethane. If I remember correctly, it took 3 coats of stain to match my cabinets.
Hope this helps....

A: If I recall correctly, I read that you just email Columbia Forest Products at their site and ask. I didn't need a custom cut so I never did.
