A:  Use this anywhere you would use thin plywood. It would need solid backing.

A:  Stair risers? I advise not. This is not what I would call structural grade plywood. It is fine for light duty projects, but the core of the board is a softer wood than the surface veneer of oak. I was able to cut up mine by scoring ea side with a simple box cutter & snapping it. And any wood can be painted, but light stain &/or clear coat for this material is more attractive in my opinion.

A:  If the use of a wood grain background is important, you could use the 1/4" plywood by drilling holes where the nails will go, that are slightly smaller than the size of the nail. This will avoid the splitting. If the plywood is going to hold the nail, with nothing behind it, I would suggest a little thicker plywood, 3/8" or even 1/2" to be able to hold the nail securely.

A:  Hello Wendy, I would recommend the 1/2" version of this. It will perform much better for you.
