Q:My tube has 1/2 inch outside diameter with 3/8 inch inside diameter. Can I use this product “1/2 in. Copper 90-Degree Press x Press Pressure Elbow ” to connect them?

Answer This Question

A:  No... the pipe size is the inside diameter, meaning that the outside of the 1/2 you mentioned is really 3/8 tubing.

A:  should work since the critical dimension is the OD being half inch

A:  Thank you for your inquiry on the 1/2 in. Copper Press x Press x Press Pressure Tee. NIBCO fittings are sized nominally, meaning that it is the inside diameter of the tubing that defines its size. If the ID is 3/8 in. you will need to use a 3/8 in fitting. If you need further assistance, you can reach a NIBCO Technical Services Advisor, M-F 8am - 6pm EST, by phone at (888) 446-4226. Thank you!

Q:How far back over the pipe can you pull the Press fitting? This will be my first time working with crimped fittings and I'm wondering if they have any sort of obstruction built into them that would make it difficult to tap into old copper pipes that are fixed in place and can't be moved laterally to increase the gap between them.

A:  You have to insert the pipe all the way to the stop in the fitting. You should dry-fit each connection and mark the pipe with a sharpie so you can be sure it is all the way in before making the press. For 3/4" pipe it goes about a inch into the fitting. For 1/2" pipe it is about 5/8".

A:  There are a range of tools that do pro-press fittings. I purchased a manual propress tool from IWISS to replumb a couple of bathrooms which worked out nicely. I was unable to rent this tool anywhere so this approach made the most sense.
