Answer This Question

A:  Hi Bigman, It sounds like you have several painting projects - one exterior and four interior projects. First, for the exterior project, additional information is needed in order to calculate how much paint is needed to paint your complex/home. Start with measuring the perimeter of your complex - let's say it is 22 X 30. In this example your perimeter would be 22 + 30 + 22 + 30 = 104. Next, measure the height of the building starting from the foundation to the roof line (excluding gables.) In our example, we are going to imagine a two story home that is 18 ft high to the roof line. Now multiply the perimeter of the home by the height. (104 x 18 = 1,872). An average window is 15 square feet and an average door is 20 square feet. You can subtract doors and windows from your calculation if you would like a more accurate estimate. If you have gables, multiply the width of the gable by its height and divide by two for each gable. For example, I may have two gables that are 10ft. high and 22 feet long so my calculation would be 10 x 22 = 220 / 2 is 110 sq feet per gable. I would add 220 to the house body measurement of 1,872 for a total of 2,092. A gallon of Behr Premium Plus Ultra Exterior Paint covers 250-400 square feet, depending upon your surface. If you have a smooth, sealed surface you will use less paint and if you have a rough, porous surface, you will require more paint. In my example I would need between five and eight gallons of paint (depending upon the surface) to apply one coat of paint to the home. For the interior, in order to estimate the amount of paint needed for your project, it is necessary to know the length of your room, the width of your room and the height of your wall. First, calculate the square footage for the walls in your room. If you have two walls that are 10 feet wide and 10 feet high. The calculation for one of the walls at this size is 10 ft. (width) multiplied by 10 ft. (height) or 100 square feet. Since you have two walls at this same size, simply multiply by two... for a total of 200 square feet. If your other two walls are 11 feet in length and 10 feet high. The calculation for one of the walls at this size is 11 ft (length) multiplied by 10 ft (height) or 110 square feet. Since you have two walls at this same size, simply multiply by two for a total of 220 square feet. Add the total for all of your walls together (200 + 220) and you have a total of 420 square feet of wall surface to cover. If you wish, you can re-post the dimensions and we will help you calculate the amount of paint needed for your project. Thanks for your inquiry!
