Q:what is the best type of paint for in a living room and dining room?

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi Daisy, I assume your question is in regards to which sheen is best for a particular room. If you are looking for more information, please feel free to re-post a follow-up with more specifics. In general, lower sheens hide surface imperfections better than higher sheens. Low sheens like Flat, are less reflective and small dings or other wall irregularities are not as apparent since the light does not bounce off as much as a shinier sheens. On the other hand, higher sheens tend to be more dirt and moisture resistant. The higher the sheen, the more easily dirt and grime wipe off the surface. For instance, many kitchen cabinets are painted with Hi-Gloss paint since the shiny, hard finish wipes clean easily and moisture does not easily penetrate the paint film. Behr Paints come in a wide range of sheens so you have a lot of choice to make certain that the sheen performs well in your specific room and you can find a sheen level that meets your decorating tastes. The lowest sheen is Flat (available in Premium Plus Interior Paint), followed by Flat Enamel (available in Premium Plus Paint and Premium Plus Ultra Paint and Primer in One), then Eggshell Enamel (available in Premium Plus Paint and Premium Plus Ultra Paint and Primer in One), then Satin Enamel (available in Premium Plus Paint and Premium Plus Ultra Paint and Primer in One), then Semi Gloss Enamel (available in Premium Plus Paint and Premium Plus Ultra Paint and Primer in One)and the shiniest sheen is Hi-Gloss Enamel(available in Premium Plus Paint). Generally stairways and hallways get a lot of traffic- people walking in and out, items touching or hitting the walls, kids and pets touching and moving through the area and so on. In this case, a higher sheen such as Satin Enamel is a great choice for the wall and Semi-Gloss is recommended for trim and doors. You could, of course use Semi-Gloss on the wall as well if you like your walls shinier. I'm guessing your living room and dining room do not see the same amount of traffic and activity so an Eggshell Enamel is a good choice. Again, if you have a particularly active household, you could opt to go shinier in these rooms as well and use Satin Enamel. Thanks for your inquiry!
