Q:I want to stain some Douglas fir ceiling beams (which have a natural red tone) to look more like white oak. Is there a color of solid color stain that would help achieve this look? Also what type of topcoat should be used for a matte or flat finish?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi Bobby, thank you for your question. As it turns out, we don't recommend mixing the transparent and semi-transparent stains, which can cause performance and appearance issues. For more color, applying a semi-transparent stain to your project is best. Have a great day! - Randy

Q:Can you use this on cedar?

          Answer This Question

A:  Hi JohnR, thank you for your question. The Premium Solid Color Wood Stain can be applied to cedar wood. This wood can contain a high amount of tannin, and tannin bleeding can occur. If this is noticed, it's a good idea to prime the surface with a stain-blocking primer such as our Interior/Exterior Multi-Surface Primer 436. This will help seal the wood and block the stains/tannins from bleeding through to your top coat. Have a great day! - Randy

Q:Can the semi-transparent be applied to a fence that had the same product applied 9 years ago? There is slight peeling in some areas that got a lot of moisture from sprinklers, but most of the fence is in great shape.

            Answer This Question

A:  Hi Wondering, thanks for the question. You can apply the Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer to the same surface where it was applied previously, but you would want to remove any peeling stain and then clean the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner. Also, remember that since the stain is semi-transparent, any repairs or differences would be noticeable through the stain. One suggestion would be to use our Solid-Color Stain, as it is opaque and will completely cover the existing color. If you have any other questions about your project, feel free to reach out to us directly. our customer care team is happy to help. -Ronald

Q:Can this Product in Coriivan Brown be used on a exterior vinyl extrusion in New England? If so, how should you prepare the surface of the vinyl?

              Answer This Question

A:  Hi there, thanks for the question. We don't recommend using our Solid-Color Stain on vinyl surfaces. A better option would be to have the Cordovan Brown mixed into one of our exterior paints, such as the Marquee Exterior Paint. To prepare the vinyl. I'd recommend scuff-sanding it to promote the adhesion of the paint. The other option would be to prime it first with our Bonding Primer before painting. Have a great day! -Ronald
